Trevor Stuurman

‘The Explorer’s lantern has the power to reveal true character. He sees more than meets the eye, and his lantern rouses everything it touches, freeing their inner being and allowing them to emerge’

Man about town and sartorial maven, 24-year-old Trevor Stuurman has created a name for himself in the fashion industry both in front and behind the lens.

He is a creative with a growing global footprint, often referred to as a bright small-town boy with big city dreams. He was born and raised in Kimberley.

Trevor Stuurman is one of South Africa’s most loved multi-media visual artists.  CNN has described this prolific African talent as a creative and cultural force.

Ambitious, driven and focused, in 2012 Trevor effortlessly scooped the Elle Style Reporter title for his expert documentation of South African street style. He’s since gone on to show his work all over the world and been invited to shoot street style looks at Pitti Uomo 89.

With an Honors degree in Motion Picture and Live Performance, Trevor has just completed a documentary that he co-directed entitled Ubuhle Besintu, which follows the journey of world-renowned knitwear designer Laduma Ngxolo. In 2015 he was the Autumn Winter face of Woolworths and this year continues as trends consultant to the brand.

“My inspiration stems from my longing for a better understanding of where we come from in order to gain direction for the future. Our history has always been told by the other which is very problematic as this has resulted in the distortion and erasure of our existence.”

Trevor has been featured in House and Leisure’s 2014 Rising Star, the Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans 2015, and Destiny Magazine’s The Power of 40 List. He’s been named GQ Best Dressed Man in 2015 and SA Style Awards 2015 Next Big Thing. Most recently he was the keynote speaker at the Sunglasses Hut Reflections Fashion Forum 2016 and invited to be part of the judging panel for the SA Fashion Week New Talent Search 2016.

The acclaim has seen him seamlessly swapping the street scene for high-end fashion events such as London, New York and Milan Fashion Week. Stuurman knows how to carefully capture colour, character, texture and feeling to breathe life into his still images. We can’t get enough of artists who embrace every aspect of their unique African culture and heritage. Stuurman often speaks about drawing his central inspiration and drive from cultures of his country and mother continent.Stuurman spends most of his time researching urban style cultures across the African world. Stuurman gives of his time to mentoring young students from the Alan Grey Orbis Foundation.

Most recently Stuurman collaborated with Simon & Mary on their fez-style hats which were inspired by Ndebele use of colour and beaded bracelets. The breakthrough achieved by the range is part of what confirms Stuurman as a creative revolutionary bent on shaping the future of the continent.

Marvel Studios and Disney identified Stuurman as a creative giant and commissioned him to do art work for the biggest film to date, Black Panther. Stuurman has recently also joined forces with Vogue as contributor.

“I see Africans reclaiming their rightful positions as kings and queens of design and creativity. I see us rebranding African creativity through the clever use of technology, innovation, and authentic storytelling. The value of our creativity has always been discounted to arts and craft and this because many Africans create from a place of necessity and survival vs recreation and leisure.” Trevor Stuurman on African fashion and art in 10 years.
